Getting to know how accents work is helpful to your professional communication skills!
Guess what- we ALL have an accent.
In this week's Wednesday Video, the nice folks at BrainStuff let us know a bit about how accents actually develop. Note a very important point made in the video- while perception of accents may vary from place to place, there is no accent that is better than another. Also, there is no such thing as being accent free or having completely neutral speech. No matter what you do, you'll always have an accent to someone!
Here's what we would add to the breakdown. Remember, just as with your regionalisms, your accent is part of YOU and your personal stamp. Instead of trying to force yourself to completely lose an accent, why not focus on using clear articulation WITHIN your accent, so you can maintain your vocal identity while being understood? We all sound different- what's important is that your audience can comprehend your message.
How do you feel about your accent? Do you embrace it, or fight it? Have you worked consciously to lose an accent, or have you worked on pronunciation and articulation within it so you can be understood? Let us know below!
Our thanks to BrainStuff for the great video!
